2. James Allen and Blue Nile
James Allen and Blue Nile look like attractive options with lots of diamonds and what looks like good value overall. Both, are diamond aggregators and do not own the diamonds or have them in their possession.
Do take care, that unless you have first hand diamond experience or education, choosing a good diamond online can be hard without a trusted jeweller. There are many diamonds we veto and do not show our clients - bad cutting style, unwanted tints, "bad" inclusions that drastically reduce the diamond sparkle and other undesirable factors.
Selecting a diamond without in depth knowledge can result in a poor quality diamond purchased - the diamond we select for our clients on the left and an online diamond on the right.
At Valentina Fine Jewellery, we ensure your personal curated diamond selection meets our strict criteria. Let's take ovals for example - not every oval cut diamond has the same look and sparkle, and often oval diamonds will have an undesirable bow tie. The level of bow tie varies in each diamond. We ensure the stones we show our clients are the best in the world in terms of cutting, fire and brilliance.
From the diamond videos on James Allen or Blue Nile, it would be very hard to tell whether a diamond will have this bow tie or not unless you know what to look for.
Below, are the diamonds we select and show our clients for their engagement rings, with minimal or no bow tie and beautiful faceting.
Minimal or no bow tie oval diamonds
Next, are examples of bad bow tie oval diamonds, which can be hard to spot from an online video and photo unless you are trained in diamonds. The bow tie is a black out in the middle of your diamond, which does not reflect light and distracts from the stone. By personally selecting the diamonds we show you, we filter out stones with such faceting.

James Allen and Blue Nile's rings settings are also mass produced. If you do have the confidence in choosing a diamond online without a diamond specialist and you love their ring styles, then this may be a great option for you.
3. Other Hong Kong Jewellers
Most other jewellers in Hong Kong make their jewellery and engagement rings in Chinese factories, use lesser quality diamonds and often have no educational diamond background.
A factory overseas means if something isn't perfect, it will take time to fix. Mass produced jewellery isn't always of the high quality we offer, with wonky misaligned prongs, poor overall craftsmanship and finish and of course the risk of customs delay your diamond or ring if you are having it made from scratch.
There is a small handful of jewellers who make rings here in Hong Kong, but at a huge premium due to having store premisses. We do not have a physical store and can pass the savings direct to our customers.
We proudly make all of our jewellery in Hong Kong and we check your ring every stage of the process - from raw gold or platinum casting, to stone setting and the final polishing. Should the ring size not be perfect, we can also adjust the size within a day. Shipping a ring back to China will take a week at best with other jewellers.
4. Big Fine Jewellery Brands
Hong Kong has all the fine jewellery high end brands such as Cartier, De Beers and Tiffany's. If a brand name is something your partner desires and is important, you should be able to find something that will resemble your ring specification.
We do often have clients tell us that the selection within the brand stores is very limited for the specific diamond cut they are after i.e. if you are after a 1.50 carat E or F colour and VS clarity oval cut, the stores may only have a 1 carat and a 2 carat H and G, and not the exact setting or style you wanted. With Valentina Fine Jewellery, we source the exact diamond you need, and craft the dream ring - no sacrifices.
We use exactly the same diamonds that these big brands use, all of the diamonds we show you are GIA certified, however our prices (and we would like to say service) are much friendlier.
Stone Choice: Natural Diamond, Lab Grown Diamond or Gemstone
It's a big decision deciding the centre stone, and there are so many options out there. We create bespoke engagement rings with GIA certified natural diamonds, IGI and GIA certified lab grown diamonds and gemstones.
Every client has different motivations and ethical considerations when choosing natural vs lab grown diamonds. Our advice is always impartial and we walk you through the differences and pros and cons of each.
